All classics. If you’re in the mood to watch a romantic comedy, you’re more than likely to choose something from the 1980s or ’90s—it’s a way of life. Actually, 1998 specifically saw a 50% increase in romantic comedy scripts brought to the studios from the previous year, and for good reason.

But what about today’s rom-coms?

Well, we certainly don’t see as many of them. And while the ones we do hold near similar premises to our beloved 1990s films, there are some significant changes to note, too. Here, I compare Rob Reiner’s 1989 When Harry Met Sally to Judd Apatow’s 2015 Trainwreck in order to answer one very important question: Where are rom-coms now?
